Dan Ahern and I got together in mid-1999 to jam a bit. Then Dan bought a very early version of the digital recording software called CakeWalk and we decided to make a CD with just two acoustic guitars and our voices. CakeWalk was very basic and Dan wasn't that clued up on how to get the best out of it. The result was what must be one of the worst CD's ever recorded. Never mind, we had fun doing it!
The songs are mostly covers of various artists, including our then favourite, Keb' Mo'. All the songs were recorded in single takes, which is quite a feat in itself, with Dan playing lead guitar and me on rythme and singing. When the CD was finally finished in December 1999 we went out to celebrate at the posh Twelve Apostles Hotel in Oudekraal and persuaded the management to play the CD in the restaurant while we were dining. Talk about nerve!
During this time I had begun jazz guitar lessons at the Jazz Workshop with Alvin Dyers and had started writing my own songs. I was keen to record some of my own compositions but Dan simply wasn't interested. So we parted musical ways and I went on to create my own recording studio and record my album Shooting The Breeze.
